Bharat Forge's wholly owned defence subsidiary, Kalyani Strategic Systems (KSSL), signed a strategic alliance agreement with Thales to establish an industrial capability for 70-mm rocket systems in India. The agreement covered technology transfer, local production and distribution of unguided and laser-guided rockets and associated equipment for Indian and global requirements. The first fully assembled rocket produced in India was targeted for early 2027. KSSL's defence platform reported FY26 turnover of ₹1,224 crore, while Bharat Forge's defence order book stood at ₹11,196 crore in the first quarter of FY27.

BENGALURU, Sept 3 - India's Bharat Forge BFRG.NS said on Thursday its defence unit signed an agreement with France's Thales TCFP.PA to establish advanced industrial capability to build 70-mm rocket systems in the country.

India is the world's fifth-largest military spender and the second-largest arms importer after Ukraine, according to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. In recent years, it has been pushing for domestic manufacturing of defence equipment either on its own or in collaboration with foreign partners.

The agreement, signed during the Belgian prime minister's visit to India, aims to strengthen defence cooperation between the countries, the firms said.

Thales' 70-mm rocket systems can be fired from air, ground or naval applications platforms and could be used to counter drones, according to the company's website. They are manufactured by its Belgian unit.

The companies said the Indian army already uses these rocket systems.

Thales will contribute its expertise, while India's Kalyani Strategic Systems will use its local manufacturing and testing capabilities, to support the production of 70-mm rocket systems. The companies said the first fully assembled rocket produced in India is expected in early 2027.

"By combining our combat-proven 70-mm rocket expertise from Belgium with KSSL’s engineering and manufacturing strengths, we are co-creating capabilities that will enhance India’s operational readiness and advance its vision of self-reliance in critical defence technologies," Thales India Vice-President Ankur Kanaglekar said.

Bharat Forge’s board approved a plan to raise up to ₹2,500 crore through equity shares, debt or securities convertible into equity, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals. The issuance method, price, timing and terms were delegated to its Investment Committee–Strategic Business. It also approved incorporating a subsidiary in Malaysia to pursue semiconductor and allied activities, with further details to be provided as formalities were completed. For the June quarter, consolidated revenue rose to ₹4,640 crore from ₹3,909 crore a year earlier, while the group reported a net loss of ₹89.9 crore after a ₹358 crore exceptional charge for restructuring its German BF CDP unit. Standalone revenue was ₹2,347 crore and profit was ₹321 crore, compared with ₹2,105 crore and ₹339 crore in the year-earlier quarter. The ₹1,650 crore QIP completed in FY25 was fully utilised by September 2025. FY26 standalone revenue was about ₹8,400 crore and the defence order book stood at ₹10,961 crore.

NEW DELHI, May 27 (Reuters) - India has sought initial proposals to locally manufacture a fifth generation combat aircraft from three short-listed bidders, news agency ANI reported on Wednesday, citing defence officials.

Here are some details:

• The bidders are Tata Advanced Systems, and joint ventures between Larsen and Toubro LART.NS-Bharat Electronics BAJE.NS, and Bharat Forge BFRG.NS-BEML BEML.NS – all of them Indian companies.

• India approved a programme to build the stealth fighter jets and invited interest for the same from defence firms last year, weeks after a fierce military conflict with nuclear-armed foe Pakistan.
