Feb 6 (Reuters) - Indian construction materials maker Prism Johnson PRIS.NS reported a profit for the first time in five quarters on Thursday, helped by tax gains related to previous periods.

The company reported a net profit of 481.2 million rupees ($5.5 million), during the October-December period, compared with a loss of 34.5 million rupees a year ago.

Shares of the Hyderabad-based company spiked up to 8% after the results, before losing all of its gains.

However, at a pre-tax basis, the company's net loss widened to 337.1 million rupees, from 89.7 million rupees a year earlier.

Net sales rose 6% on strong performance in its insurance and tilemaking segments, which cushioned weakness in cement and ready-made concrete businesses.

Cement companies have so far reported a mixed set of earnings in the quarter, where they grappled with soft demand and weak prices.

Strong volumes boosted market leader UltraTech ULTC.NS, its rival Adani Group's cement businesses Ambuja ABUJ.NS and ACC ACC.NS, while smaller company Dalmia Bharat DALB.NS took a hit in the quarter due to lower prices.

Cement business, which formed around 39% of the topline, saw a 2.5% drop in sales. Revenue from ready-made concrete businesses also saw a fall of 6.5%.

However, other businesses helped offset the impact. The tilemaking segment rose 4.8%, while insurance business surged over threefold.

Nov 13 (Reuters) - Indian construction materials maker Prism Johnson PRIS.NS on Wednesday posted a bigger-than-expected quarterly loss, as cement prices persistently declined and demand remained tepid.

The company's consolidated net loss stood at 897.9 million rupees ($10.6 million) in the three months ended Sept. 30, marking a second straight quarter of losses. Prism Johnson had reported a net profit of 1.83 billion rupees a year ago.

The reported loss is also bigger than the analysts' estimates of a 122.8 million rupee loss, as per data compiled by LSEG.

Average cement prices slumped to a 51-month low around July-end and the first half of August, and only rose marginally in the later part of the quarter, Elara Capital said in a note.

Prices for the overall quarter declined 7% year-on-year, the brokerage added.

Demand in the reported quarter was also largely muted as the industry, already hit by an election-linked slowdown in construction activity in the June quarter, did not see any improvement due to above-average rainfall in the country.

The company's net sales dropped 5.2% to 16.39 billion rupees, owing to a 17% decline in its cement business, which makes up 37% of the revenue.

Prism Johnson's other two businesses - tiles and concrete mix - posted a 1% and 0.4% drop in revenues in their respective segment.

The company's shares, which were in the red ahead of results, fell 2.5% post results.

India's top cement maker, UltraTech Cement, ULTC.NS missed second-quarter profit estimates on lower prices and bleak demand.

BENGALURU, Aug 9 (Reuters) - India's Prism Johnson PRIS.NS posted a loss for the first quarter on Friday, as bleak demand and lacklustre prices in its key cement business weighed on the construction materials maker.

The company posted a consolidated net loss after tax of 77 million rupees (about $918,000) for the quarter ended June 30, versus a profit of 178.9 million rupees a year earlier.

Net sales dropped 8% to 17.47 billion rupees, pulled down by a 15% fall in its cement segment that makes up 44% of the topline.

During the April-June period, cement makers have grappled with cement prices hovering around their lowest levels in more than three years. Demand was also tepid due to the general elections and heatwaves, which led to a construction slowdown.

India's top cement producer UltraTech Cement ULTC.NS missed estimates for first-quarter earnings last month, but forecast a pick-up in prices and demand from October onwards.

"Upcoming capacity additions in Central India by other cement companies to intensify competition," Prism Johnson said on Friday, at a time when cement makers are ramping up supply capacity in the prospect of sustained demand.

The company has two cement mills - one each in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Prism Johnson also makes ceramic tiles in its much-smaller HRJ segment, which witnessed a nearly 2% revenue drop year-on-year.

Shares of Prism Johnson dropped as much as 3.7% after the results were announced.

May 16 (Reuters) - Indian construction materials maker Prism Johnson PRIS.NS on Thursday posted a loss in the fourth quarter hurt by lower prices in its cement segment.

Consolidated net loss after tax stood at 305 million rupees ($3.7 million) for the quarter ended March 31, compared with a profit of 42.5 million rupees in the year-ago period.

Net sales fell marginally to 20.46 billion rupees from 20.56 billion rupees a year ago. Revenue from Prism Johnson's largest segment, cement, declined 3.3%.

Cement makers usually resort to price cuts in the March-quarter to boost sales volumes, in order to clear year-end inventory backlogs.

While the cost of materials consumed fell 2.6%, this could not offset the impact of price cuts taken by the company, with the company stating that price realisation in the cement business declined 6.9% year-on year.

Shares of Prism Johnson fell 3.2% after posting results, extending its year-to-date losses to 19.8%

BENGALURU, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Indian building materials maker Prism Johnson PRIS.NS reported a second-quarter profit on Friday, compared to a loss a year ago, helped by a one-time gain from the sale of some assets.

Consolidated profit after tax was at 1.83 billion rupees ($21.98 million) in the quarter ended Sept. 30. The cement and tiles maker had reported a loss of 826.2 million rupees in the same quarter a year earlier.

The firm recognised a one-time gain of 3.9 billion rupees from the sale of a mining lease and land in the state of Andhra Pradesh to Chennai-based Ramco Cements TRCE.NS.

The firm reported a narrower loss of 380.8 million rupees before the exceptional item and taxes from a loss of 952 million rupees a year ago, on strong cement sales.

Total expenses rose 6.7% to 18.84 billion rupees.

Last month, cement maker UltraTech Cement ULTC.NS topped second-quarter revenue estimates on strong domestic demand, while ACC ACC.NS posted a bigger-than-expected profit.

Prism Johnson's net sales rose nearly 6% to 17.30 billion rupees. Its revenue from the cement segment, which accounts for more than half of overall sales, climbed more than 16%.

Shares of the company rose as much as 4.9% to 146.8 rupees after the results were announced. They rose 1.3% during the July-September period.
